An African based news agency ThisDay recently reported on the First National Moringa Oleifera Summit. This summit was created to gather resources and funding to further the study of the Moringa plant. The Committee has acknowledged the vast benefits of the Moringa treeĀ as ThisDay writes, “This is coming on the heels of the Council’s financial support for research into the plant, which a Chemical Engineer and Dean of Faculty of Engineering, University of Maiduguri, Prof. Idris Bugaje said had been on for about 15 years. Moringa Oleifera, which is also known as Drumstick Tree or Horseradish plant in English, Zogale in Hausa, Okwe Oyibo in Igbo and Ewe Ile in Yoruba, is popularly known as ‘the miracle tree’ or ‘tree of life’. There is an old saying that, ‘Moringa leaves prevent 300 diseases’.” The Committee draws on leading experts in the fields of Pharmaceutical research, medicine development research, biotechnology, and AIDS prevention scholars, among others, to try and utilize Moringa to its fullest potential.
