Scholarship Supporting Moringa Development in Africa
On November 15, 2009 the congregation at the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church celebrated the accomplishments of Isaiah Njimbu.
Isaiah Njimbu was sponsored by the local congregation to attend and graduate from the African University in 2006. Since then Isaiah Njimbu has developed the Child Action Initiative, designed to provide desperately needed educational opportunities, food resources, health care and potable water for the residents of Kasungami, a village located near the nation’s second-largest city, Lubumbashi. The Child Action Initiative has expanded to cover not only the needs of children but the needs of adults and community.
In addition to providing school opportunities for children, the program is educating adults on how to provide for themselves and their families. Skills such as sewing, knitting and crocheting, considered hobby activities in most of the world, are valuable to those seeking to clothe themselves. Farming techniques are being taught, including use of the moringa tree, whose leaves are both nutritious and versatile enough to be made into everything from flour to beverages.
